In Mrs. Hellenga’s first grade class, students had a great time choosing partners with the wheel of name generator! They love seeing whose name pops up, and it’s a fun way to practice reading their classmates’ names. Once partners were picked, students read a story together, highlighted important deals in the book, and wrote their answers on their comprehension pages.

Middle school students worked on adding and subtracting different lengths of strings to find the total length and find the missing length. This enforced the ability to combine rational numbers in fraction form and find the common denominator. In doing so students worked on their knowledge of greatest common factors, least common multiples, and simplifying fractions and mixed numbers.

As the first quarter wraps up for our Andes Central students, Ms. Kaiser's Juniors and Sophomores are also wrapping up their own units.
After the Juniors read The Crucible, they analyzed one of its themes using a game. Students got notecards with a name, age, and occupation. They took turns introducing themselves to each other with their fake identities. However, Ms. Kaiser told students that one person was a witch! The entire class had to come to a consensus about which person was the witch, and that person was then eliminated. In the end, no one was the witch, but students realized the power of hopping on the bandwagon.
Similarly, Sophomores analyzed Logical Fallacies as modes of persuasion. After identifying the main types and watching the movie 12 Angry Men, students created their own advertisements using different Logical Fallacies, trying to persuade their audiences.

Last week, Andes Central School celebrated Native American Week. Chelaine Knudsen's insights on Native American history was fascinating, and Francis Dupris's perspective on setting goals as a Native American and Veteran was incredibly motivating.

Kansas Middletent's talks on anti-bullying and acceptance were so important, especially for our students. We had Bobby Jones address the sensitive topic of suicide, given the higher rates in Native American communities.

Jessie Taken Alive's presentation, especially her book "We're All Related," beautifully highlighted the Native American belief in interconnectedness. It was a week filled with learning and understanding.
